Since you have a lift, isn't the real question which is easier? It may be 
possible to do from above, but may be easier from below if you can stand under 
the car.

I haven't done a starter replacement on a 617, but I probably should do it on 
my 300SD as it has trouble cranking for more than 10-15 seconds at a time which 
can make winter starts difficult.
