Never quite understood, maybe someone here with more paint knowledge than us
can tell you. I just know that 040 is a single stage color. There are others,
maybe arctic white, but I’m not completely sure.

You might recall my efforts to recover Tarek’s former S500 that was badly
faded/oxidized:

That’s 040. I’ll do something similar but probably not quite as aggressive on
the ML550 roof. I’ll probably start out with Ardex 1500 and a maroon wool pad
on my 9” polisher.

So how does one know if it is single stage or clear coated? I think the
options list says something like “paint protection” or something, I’ve never
known exactly what that means. I’ll have to look up the details

The single stage paints are the best, as they’re really hard to damage when
“correcting”. The roof of the ML550 is really nasty due to it appearing to have
bene parked outside under a tree or something. If the weather wasn’t so
oppressive in FL I would be hitting it with my high speed polisher and a
lambswool pad with some really heavy compound. I know I can recover it but it
will take some work, but I’m not looking to sweat 30 pounds of water out to do
it.

The transmission is working for now after clearing the code. Max found a vid of
a guy just cleaning the solenoids and conductor plate of schmutz and getting it
to work so I think that and new fluid/filter will probably cure it.

I decided to do the paint on the hood this afternoon. The previous owner lived
near the shipyard and did construction so the top part of the car has all kinds
of crust on the paint. Did a 4 stage paint correction on the hood and it came
out incredibly well for a 15yo car. Clay bar, compound buffing, polish and wax.
040 Mercedes black is my favorite color! The rest of the car will look amazing
too.

And I have a buyer!
