That is exactly how its supposed to be. What you needed to have selected was the button right next the the defrost button.

Today, was in the low 70s and raining - needed the defrost - pushed the
button & the fan went to high and the temp of the air blowing out was
very warm.  It cleared the w'shield quickly but I didn't think the warm
air blowing was normal.  Also, I could feel the ac compressor coming
on/off ocassionally - which I believe is normal..

Is this how the defrost works?
