The good news is that the oil cooler on the CL600 looks to be ok. So no 
near-total engine tear down to replace it. Sorta good news is that the issue 
now appears to be the right cam position sensor, the code for which I saw when 
I was checking the car out. I think that’s what’s causing poor running. 

Ordered the part, $55, it came yesterday so I figured I could do a quick swap. 
Wrong. There is no way to get the thing out without removing (partially) the 
intake manifold as it lacks about an inch or two of clearance to slide it out 
of its hole. Bugger. I curse the engine engineers.
