Ha!

That sound like me…

My older brother had a VW Beetle when I was in middle school. He played
baseball in the afternoons after school and shared rides with a buddy. That
means I was home after school by myself with the Beetle, which I would
carefully sneak out and drive around our neighborhood. Understand that I had
been doing farm work since I was about 12, so I had rudimentary experience with
manual transmissions, just no over the road experience. I probably did this off
and on when possible over 2-3 years.

When my Dad helped me buy my first car, a two-door 1970 Ford Maverick with a
“three on the tree”, he took me around our block in the car while explaining
how to drive a stick.

I got behind the wheel and within one or two circuits of the neighborhood was
driving it easily. Dad was convinced he was the world’s absolute best driving
teacher after that, despite giving me the funny eyeball when remarking about
how quickly I picked up the skill.

I never told him about the Beetle. Hee. I did, however, tell my brother some
years later.
