If you take the shifter out, you'll probably find that the collar on the plastic bushing has broken partially or completely off. A new bushing ordered from Germany will probably solve the problem. Meade Dillon [EMAIL PROTECTED] sent me diagrams and parts numbers which were invaluable in replacing parts that had fallen off and dropped to the road. The diagrams were on a hard drive that went bad but here are the parts number he sent later on. These refer to the drawing which you will need to identify the bushing and any missing parts:
...........................................
Key part, these parts are for "From vehicle id #307216" (last part of VIN). I'm guessing that is correct given the year of your car, you'll need to verify that last numbers if VIN are greater than this.

PS: I couldn't find any used shifter assemblies from the usual sources nationwide.

Subject: [MBZ] 240D Shifter

The 4-speed shifter in my 240D has a worn reverse lock out. It
allows me to accidently hit reverse while trying to find 1st gear. I
hear that the 4-speed shifter used on the 115 chassis 240Ds is better
and does not develop this problem. Does anyone know if they are
interchangeable? Does anyone know how I could fix the one in the car?
Thanks,
John Ingram
