Have you seen the recent news report about a former astronaut who died in a plane crash. He was the sole occupant of the plane and was 90 years old.

1968 (?) 280SE 3.5. I stopped by to check it out. It was awesome and was too
$$ for me at that point in my journey but we talked at length about his W116
(since I pulled up in my W123). This is when I learned that both he and his
German wife were flight instructors and they own two aircraft.
Over the next 30 years anytime either of them were out in the yard or sitting
on the porch I’d stop to chat. He passed in 2000, but his Frau keeps plugging
along. The old gal, at 94, still gets in two hours a month in either her 1954
Beech E35, or her 1961 Mooney M20B and she dutifully drives the 300SD once a
week on a three mile loop.
I talked with her daughter towards the end of last year and she said that she
likely be taking mom’s keys away sometime this year based on the trajectory of
her dementia. I told daughter that if no one in the family wanted the 300SD I
call dibs.
Daughter and I exchanged emails pretty regularly for several months but the
last email I sent a month ago remains unanswered. When I drive by it looks like
she’s been missing her weekly jaunt.
I reckon we’ll see.
