Ain't that the truth. My '88 GMC S15 2.8l was underpowered on the highway but
regularly turned in 25mpg and was great in the woods.

My wife is going from a 3 mile commute to about 15 miles and I'm a bit
concerned about her spending everything she makes in fuel (well not that bad
but you get the idea). She drives my Dakota which does around 18mpg. Theory 1
has me making my own frankenheap but my 240D only averaged around 28mpg which
would barely pay for the added insurance and fees although it'd be handy to
have a 3rd car.
The other idea is to buy a new vehicle, something small that gets better
mileage. Gotta be 4wd so I can tow my snowmobile trailers and go to camp. Best
thing I've found so far is a Suzuki Vitara or Chevy Tracker 2 door convertable.
Those are rated for 26mpg on the highway which is okay but I'm not sure its
better enough to make it worth buying another vehicle while my Dakota still has
plenty of miles in it...

They average around 14 or 15 in town driving and 18-19 highway. I get
near
that with my 7100# conversion van. 15 at 55MPH pulling a 36 foot
camper
actually. My 5700# M37 gets 12 local........Seems they could do allot
better is all I am saying.

Mike

You call that a frankenheap? How about this: Put a sprinter engine
in your Dakota.
