I guess if the cluster unit itself doesn't fit, the individual instruments
themselves might slot straight into my cluster?

The shift pips will likely be off on the speedometer, and the tachometer
will probably be all wrong.  Not the best solution out there, but it
could possibly be made to work if you were disassembling and swapping
components around.  Have you tried lubricating the sleeve bearing in
the speedometer head?  I use M1 5W20 for this sort of stuff right now.
