115's are 4 speeds, they start in 2nd. You have to push pedal down all
the way and hit the kickdown to go into first, or manually shift it there.

I agree, all of the older MB diesels with auto tranny's I've owned started
out in 2nd.
I can't speak for the newer ones (95 and beyond).
