All of the 123/126's I've driven started in 1st gear. I double checked this
morning on the way to work in my SD (soon to be for sale...) and it will start
in first. Sometimes it will shift into 2nd within 1 second of starting, but it shifts none the less. This is with the gear shift in D. Could this be related
to the bowden cable adjustment? I've played with my SD's adjustment enough so
that it has even shifts all the way up and will down shift when under no
throttle and I move the gear shift from D-S.
Does anyone have factory documentation showing that these transmissions are
suppose to start in 2nd unless the kickdown switch is activated?

My 83 300TD always starts in first gear and is an absolute rocket (277 K
miles). I doubt I will ever want to sell such a great car.
