I know we've got some Saab enthusiasts on this list so.
Theres an '85 Saab 900 on Craigslist near me. 114k miles, 5spd. Supposedly
needs a fuel pump relay to run.
They want $200, the pictures make it look like a very nice car which
considering its a New England car means its a rust bucket but I digress.
Back in highschool I had a friend who had a '79 Saab which she let me drive
once. I remember it being a very nice driving car.
We currently need a third car for a backup and since I'm having no luck finding
another Benz I'm opening the field a bit.

I've been told that old Saabs are a nightmare to keep up. Any opinions?

Thanks
-Curt

Depends on how much maintenance/repair has been deferred. When my '77 99EMS
rusted out, it had about 120,000 miles on it and very few non-original parts.
Compression was 170 +/- 5 psi in all four cylinders. Tranny syncronized
perfectly, I could shift w/o clutching if I was careful to match revs.
I did rip the driver's seat suspension (think trampoline) shortly before I
quit driving it, but that was the only failure I can remember the car ever
experiencing (from 1984 to 1989) that wasn't related to rust or abuse.
The abuse related failure was a broken cam follower that failed at 7,000
rpm, the redline being 5500rpm on that engine. Mine had a four speed, so
the only way to go 120mph was to run 7,000 rpm. It cruised 3500 rpm at 60,
so 120,000 miles was quite a lot for that car.
