It was released in 1894 so the West was essentially won although by then although there continued to be minor skirmishes - Poncho Via (sp?) for one and I believe Teddy Roosevelt used some during the San Juan unpleasantness although the mod 1903 bolt action was the standard USA issue. Some powers that (used to) be believed soldiers would waste ammo if given the means to lay down a lot of lead! The opposite is preferable, of course. Anyway, - the Mod. 94 is the last iteration of the Winchester Level action - the same design continued to be produced until the early 90s although Win modified it somewhat to attract new customers. I have one called Ranger in 30-30 which is the same as the old Mod. 94 except for lacking the hooded front sight and having slightly shorter barrel. Similar mods were released occassional during the years since 1894. At least that's how I remember it without having to resort to the history books -- The Winchester factory in Conn. recently closed its doors for good it appears.

So, where does the Winchester 94 fit in the scheme of things historical?

when the james-younger gang went to northfield, MN, to rob the bank, the
locals met them with 1873 winchesters. guess who won that fight?

sadly, lever action cavalry guns are no longer made under the winchester
name. the tradition is hard to kill, though, and many continue to make
them, most notably Marlin. lightweight, easy handling and very fast for
their time (but not fast for today, so don't take your lever gun to shoot it
out against gang bangers with full auto AK-47s), they remain today a very
useful "brush" gun and are as good as anything at all inside of 100 yards.
