[MBZ] 83 300D fuel mileage

My 83 300D got 24.2 combined & 24.0 highway, turnpike mileage;????; my 85
300D California model got 26.1 highway, turnpike mileage?;  what is this
about these cars supposedly getting >>30-50 m.p.g.<<; my 240D (with new
engine) gets the same as the 83 300D?????
