If you can suffer an American Christian for a moment:

I, and most given to contemplation, have analyzed what it is about certain
words that makes them unacceptable in society. The four letter word could be
"buck" just as easily as it could be "fuck" and if society has labeled it
profane, it's profane. In that respect, you're correct - it's all relative.

But the important issues, as best I can articulate them, are courtesy,
decency and respect for your fellow man. Just as we are compelled to dress
nicely in certain situations, we are compelled to talk nicely in certain
situations. There are standards in society for the way we act, (and for good
reason) and speech is a big part of it. We could all act like gibbons if we
chose to, but where would that leave us?

I agree, Larry, that profanity is becoming, well, quite relative. It is
commonplace among our youth. Does any kid get his or her mouth washed out
with soap anymore? Just asking to bring to light the fact that we are
changing. Does it happen to be a change for the better? And yes, it does
smack of an intelligence deficit. Let's not use the F word more than once in
a single sentence, for starters. That is, if a sentence is even used.

And it's working its way bit by bit into mainstream acceptance. You can now
be treated to words on primetime network TV that were once forbidden. (yes,
you can now call someone a "dickhead" on a primetime TV show, just to give
one example). And how about that VW commercial that has the lady narrowly
cut off from *finishing* the expression "holy sh%*" by the scene cutting
away. Are my virgin ears stinging at all this? Come on. I'm just saying that
I'm not pleased with the slide society is riding, and I question how good
the outcome will be.

Yeah, I probably shouldn't have posted on this - it's not related to our MB
diesels, but I saw just enough posts to make me join in. Just giving my
opinion.

And of course, wishing you all a Happy one.

Brian
Doesn't care to be any particular "kind" of Christian

Missed my point. *American* english and the society that created it is at
fault. The religeous sectismus (how many kinds of Christians are there?)
helped it along.
*English* English doesn't have "foul" 4-letter words, nor does French,
Dutch, German, Italian and on and on.
I stick with (4 letters) *HAPPY NEW YEAR* (4 letters)
