Well, just a quick look at the MBUSA pre-owned list, shows a Silver '99 ML320 for $14K in Lynnwood, WA, and a White '99 ML430 for $18K in Fife - not that I would ever recommend a gas guzzler, but that shows for under 20K you can get an all-wheel drive M-B! Also, the '99 MLs don't have all the bugs out that the newer ones do, either. But most of the reported troubles were body related, such as rattles, rear hatch shocks, etc. The engines are pretty bulletproof, since they are used in lots of M-B cars.

I'm betting even a used 4Matic will put you over the 20K limit. Besides they don't have the ground clearance that the Audi has

Casey - OK, you didn't mention a spending cap. So how about looking over
4Matic used M-Bs? The StarMark site (under MBUSA) might surprise you....
After all, there's nothing as safe to have your Significant Other in than an
M-B!

(its a shame that we can't tap into the used ML 270 CDI market - those have
been out for enough years in the rest of the world that they should be
affordable, just not in the USA)

I should mention that we're just looking to purchase a used car <$20k, so
the new CDI's are strictly verboten.

Here's a vid of my wife out test driving an A6 Avant ;)
