These guys over torque lug nuts & bolts because the business is afraid of
being sued and it's easier to set the torque wrench on the high side than to
keep a calibrated torque wrench on the shelf & to train every $8.00 / hour
tire change who walks in.

Also, not all lug bolts that are too tight are over torqued. It always takes
more torque to free a bolt than to set a bolt plus the bolts will tend to
seize over time. I've had to use a long pipe on more than just several lug
bolts that I had put on with a torque wrench set at 85 lb ft.

Yep, but the key is "that I installed"... This was done by some teenage
weenie with a thundergun who thinks he ought to be in a nascar pit but is
stuck working at some tire shop. Hence, I'm rectifying the situation since I
have twisted a couple , but none off (yet)
