my g3 imac is a 500mhz and it really is adequate for web browsing, email and word processing. and it's as fast as a new pc once the pc gets hosed.
my main machine is a dual 500mz g4 gigabit ethernet powermac. while this machine would be considered hopelessly obsolete, it can do anything i ask of it and it just oozes quality. both computers run on the most recent version of OS X. the only argument i'm making here is that a 6 year old mac is still a pretty useful and practical tool for most users.
