The engine ran without any problems. Easy start, good performance. 175K miles on it. For the last 20k miles it had quite a bit blowby (wet air cleaner and at the filler plug) and leaked a lot at the top. Synthetic oil (Mobil1 10-40) since last 4 changes (at ~8k). Oil changes with vac. sucker. Engine was cold when I cleaned it. Camcover was definately leaking, don't know about the prechambers. After I replaced the gasket it was 3 qt low on oil. I toped it off and drove it to see if the leaks stoped, I heard faint noises after ~ 10 miles and at ~ 20 miles it got quickly worse. The noise was like if a crankshaft bearing is failling. After I towed it home I tried to start it and it tries to run, like hitting on 1 or 2 cylinders (similar to starving for fuel). If there is excessive blowby (hole in the piston), wouldn't there be a lot of oil in the aircleaner? Where is the best way to check compression, i.e. at the glow plug hole?

You need to be cautious and expect things to be worse or not nearly so bad as you're reading. Start by going thru the diagnosis step by step. A compression test first will tell you volumns about the engines condition. Also, what was the engine like before you washed it? How many miles on it? How long have you owned and cared for it? How often do you change oil? What kind of oil do you use? What weight? Seeing how the engine reacted do you still think the cam cover gasket was the source of the oil leak? Or is it likely one or more of the pre-chambers were leaking to begin with and washing somehow made things worse? I assume the engine had cooled while you worked on it so it was not hot when you washed it?
