I'm sure that's true. I agree with what you say about building trust and repeat business with a few select shops. I think some people stop in at whatever random place they happen to be near. That said, I had a Jiffy Lube in Illinois leave the oil filter on my VW Jetta loose after a change. Luckily I noticed that the oil was 1/2 quart low at my next refuel. It was just loose enough that it was dripping -- not a really rapid leak. That's when I gave up having other people change my oil. It's an easy job, it gives you an opportunity to eyeball-inspect everything else under the hood on a regular basis, so I do it myself.
