I was thinking about my answer while driving home from work last night and realized my answer was wrong. In an INelastic collision, energy is NOT conserved, though momentum is, as you initially wrote. Sorry for the mistake. (And I have a Ph.D. in physics! Hangs head in shame ... :-) ) Craig
