I have seen that 240D and am lusting after it. Was on CL for a month and he parks it around town with the sign. It is in very good condition, but I have not given it a test drive to truly know what may need work. Did crawl under and it is nice.

You would lose that argument, I think. I visit my dealer about once a week for a coffee (today is the day) and a stroll through the place. I know several techs quite well and have an opportunity to see what's in for service and have seen some diesels whose condition, cosmetically and mechanically is appalling. The techs say that many of their diesel customers are convinced that MBs and
diesels in particular will last forever simply with semi-regular oil
changes. And we all know that is a fallacy.

Just up the street from me what looks like about an '80 300D which has been parked there for a few days. Sunroof half open, wheels so black they could be made of coal, dark red paint faded with heavy dirt everywhere. And you can be
sure the maintenance is just as neglected as the car in general.

On the other hand, about four blocks south I have been noticing for a few years what looks like maybe a '75 or so 240D, dark green and fairly well kept
considering it's not garaged. And now there is a for sale sign on it.
