Yes, when the mast is nearly down it takes on a labored sound, and the movement becomes jerkey. Finally it stops, usually with about 2 - 4 inches of the mast exposed.
It's possible there's a broken-off piece of nylon leader in there taking up space. Take it apart and look! -- Jim
