Howdy -
By far the biggest part of a paint job is the prep - & the biggest part
of the prep is sanding - unless you have a rust bucket, in which case you
need to move on - anyway - sanding is a lengthy job - sand, check the
results, sand some more, repear, repeat, repeat.

I sanding my 911 for months - and I just wanted to take it down to the
factory primer. Having done that, I sealed it, sanded numerous times,
primed it, sanded numerous times again, shot several coats of the color,
sanded some more, shot several coats of the clear - then, wait for several
days or more, then the color sanding starts - start with 800, then 1000,
1500, 2000 and possiby 2500 and 3000 depending on what you want to end up
with. Then the buffing begins - in at least 3 stages followed by the
buffing in 3 (or more) stages - then you can polish it. I cannot begin to
think of how much work is in painting a van - Yuck!

Do it like that and you wil see why the pros charge what they do.
Depending on the prevailing labor rate and if the owner wants to trust a
valuable paint job to a minimum wage amateur and you can see hw fast the
cost goes into the stratosphere.

Of course, you can get a cheap paint job - but even a shaker can job
will cost $50 in cans -- and that's with $0 prep. And it may wash off in
the car wash --
