Hi John,
    My 602 ('91 300D 2.5t)  also seems to wait before it pegs - but I 
checked the Owners Manual and it said the Pressure should be pegged by 
approx. 3000 RPM.  Mine is like yours and pegs at 1600-1800rpm.   So, 
according to MB it doesn;t seem to be a problem.

    I had been using 15W50 Mobil 1 but changed to the more Diesel specific 
Mobil 1 Turbo & Truck 15W40 oil (Walmart has the 5 qt jug for ~$20.) and 
while I was hesitant to change and lose the added viscosity, but it seems to 
have been for the best.  I don't see any negative aspects after 9000 miles.
