Got a little further with the problem last night. It quit here. I went out and tried to start it, and it would not start. I took the coil wire off the dist. cap and laid it on the cap, and told Daughter to crank-it. Got fire and it started. Left it idle while she got her stuff to go home, and it died. Ran the same test, and it had no fire from the coil.
Then I tried grounding the (--) terminal of the coil with the ignition on. On a points ignition, that is what triggers the spark. No spark. I am pretty sure the problem is either the ICU, the coil or the electronic pickup in the distributor. At least with points, this kind of thing was easy to diagnose. I'm not positive which of the 3 components is the true culprit, or could it be a bad crank (Rev) sensor? For OK Don: there is no resistor in the ignition circuit. Full 13 V to the coil + terminal. About 10 volt on the - terminal while cranking.
