I paid under 10k after the immediate repairs, for my SDL in 1999 and 
drove it 7 years + and 230k miles.  I coulda bought a used frod or 
other detroit iron for the money, or a riceburner.  I doubt any would 
have lasted as long, and for those 7 years, I was driving an S class 
Mercedes Benz, and quite possibly one of the best looking, timeless 
cars ever made.  Not to mention the safety of a MB.
A really good SDL is still worth 10k to someone who puts on lots of miles.

When I got my first 190Dc, I found the MB diesel was the lowest 
cost/mile to operate of anything available.  The cost/mile has gone 
up dramatically, but the MB Diesel cost/mile still holds up pretty 
well if you buy used and drive lotsa miles.

Gassers cost more than diesels, but MB gassers cost/mile can still 
hold up pretty well compared to other gassers.
