As with others I highly recommend the Bilsteins - to see the difference hold your used Bilstein next to your new Monroe - like I did several years ago when finances required I buy the heaper Monroes. The chrome shaft on the Bilsteins is about twice as large (diameter) as the Monroe - same for the body of the shock - the Bilsteins are built much more substantially and their lifespan proves the point.
Buy the Bils once every 15 years or so (usually more) Vs. buying Monroes every 3-5 years. It's just like buying a good MB* and it will be the cheapest car you'll ever own, the Bilsteins are the same.
