Nope.  To paraphrase the wise Hans und Franz, we will PUMP YOU UP.
Going over bumps, etc, pumps up the pressure inside until it has
enough to ride at the correct average height.  Clever.

It's a fluid coupling, not torque converter.  Exactly the same thing
except it doesn't have a stator.  No more prone to failure IIRC
than a torque converter, perhaps a bit less since it doesn't have
a stator spline to shear off.  (Which I have had one of.)

Oh, you dreamer.  No way an extra first gear is a-gonna
help that.

If it's like anything else something is bent and the two
gears are no longer mating well.  With luck it can be bent
back.  It's old enough that the mechanism might be steel
instead of pot metal.
