IMO, the 6 cyl is the only way to go. The V8 was in it;s early stages
of development - the 4.5 was being prepped for the 450SE/SEL/SL Sedan/Conv.
So the Germans put it in some of the last production of the W108 sedans to
get more "real world" mileage. There was an interim 3.5 engine tested for a
while - also installed in W108s,109s/111s - but the 6 cylinder was at the
end of an long run - over 10 years IIRC. Plus, as other have mentioned, the
MFI needs trained attention - on the good side there are a *lot* of these 6
cyl 108s being parted out making parts readily available. While a used M IP
can be a crapshoot, sometimes you can get lucky.
I love that big V8 - gobs of torque that will spin the tires at 45-50
when kick-down is selected. Zoom-Zoom for *real*. Its an awesome engine
when running properly but all these engines have a lot of miles on them -
some easy, some hard - and it's hard to know if know if the Hans who worked
on it was Hans Dietrich or Hans Smith. And it;s so easy to get into a "while
I;m in there" kind of thing.
Naturally, I would still look for the best W108 6 cyl possible - look
for records and regular oil changes/maintanence.
It's easy to get into one of these and start putting a little money in
to fix this or that - then next week more $s to fix more stuff. If that's
the way you like to do stuff, it;s up to you. But you should try to get a
handle on the whole list of repairs needed. Maybe get a shop to do a PPI
and ask them to prioritize the repairs so you;ll know how much to budget
right away. Unless you;re Bill Gates favorite nephew. ;-)

Take care -- and good luck -
