hi Bob!

the MBZs around here running VO (and there are a lot of them) are
the smoothest sounding by far; BioD sounds almost as good, but not
quite. as i understand it, the lubricity isn't the contributing factor,
but rather the way the different fuels ignite and burn.
downsides are that if VO isn't heated, its viscosity is much higher
than the #2 it was designed for, causing strain on the injection pump
and injectors... and downstream from that, it doesn't atomize properly
causing 'splattery' injection (sure, that's the technical term!)
resulting in drops being injected instead of a mist; leading to
incomplete ignition, internal deposits and even internal component
failure due to the uneven internal temperatures caused by the VO
droplets adhering to the interior surfaces in the combustion chamber.

of course, there are lots of stories of people who take advantage of
these motors durability and manage to get away with running all kinds of
things in them for a *while*, but it never seems to last for the long
run. i've seen the inside of some relatively low-mileage 617s that ran
unheated VO, and they were pretty gunked up.
short story is, if you're going to use VO, make sure you at least
have some way to heat the fuel enough to get its viscosity down to where
it can be pumped and injected properly.

cheers!
