I would guess a well drilled four years ago would have a submersible pump lowered into the well. The pumps you describe may be auxiliaries to provide topside pressure. I've heard of people using "booster" pumps topside if the well is pretty deep since it takes part of the load off the submersible and can provide a better flow of water and higher pressure for the house and sprinkler system. Another possibility I can think of is that the well diggers went through hardpan into a "pressure dome" and the water level came up the pipe to where a surface pump could be used. We had that happen when we hand drove a couple of wells in the Tampa area when we first came to Florida. Nevertheless, that seems unlikely given the low water levels both underground and above ground nowadays.
There "could" be a smaller jet pipe inside a larger "return" pipe. This would look like a simple pump system but could actually be a jet pump.
