Interesting. What kind of circumference would such a pump have? Is it inserted through the pipe or is a larger diameter hole dug with pump and pipes dropped through that? What sort of current would such a pump require? I doubt if we are in such a dome because we are at the top of a hill that drops down to almost river level on all four sides within a mile or less. We certainly do have some hardpan in FL. When I dug a drain field for a bath I was installing in Lakeland [near Tampa] the 'uphill' end of the trench had water in it, and I was able to get to less than 1/2 inch [very carefully] of connecting the trenches with no seepage at all. Percolation rate through that stuff was almost nil. To use a spike stand sprinkler I had to take a hammer and screwdriver and pound a hole in the stuff and stand the sprinkler up in it. Fortunately it was only in a small part of the yard, but I had to extend the drain field another 10 feet to get past the hard pan so the thing would work. In my next life I plan to be rich enough to have the entire job done by the pros and not just the tank. I was fresh out of school then and the only option was sweat equity. BillR

The pumps you describe may be auxiliaries to provide topside pressure. I've heard of people using "booster" pumps topside if the well is pretty deep since it takes part of the load off the submersible and can provide a better flow of water and higher pressure for the house and sprinkler system. Another possibility I can think of is that the well diggers went through hardpan into a "pressure dome" and the water level came up the pipe to where a surface pump could be used. We had that happen when we hand drove a couple of wells in the Tampa area when we first came to Florida. Nevertheless, that seems unlikely given the low water levels both underground and above ground nowadays. There "could" be a smaller jet pipe inside a larger "return" pipe. This would look like a simple pump system but could actually be a jet pump.
