You'll spend a lot less time just fixing the stock
circuit than you would replacing it.  The stock's
problems are almost always with the connectors in
the can.  If the magnetic pickup has a problem,
just fix/replace it.  It's the most reliable form
of pickup there is.

The gauge is standard, it just measures the frequency
of the incoming pulse train.  (Though it's calibrated
for 1 pulse per rev on can-equipped cars.  It's
calibrated for 144/rev [?] on later ones that use
a pickup on the ring gear and got rid of the can.)
