There is another type of insulation like the pink fiberglass stuff too. Around
here it is sort of gray green color.
Superior in every way except price. Won't burn. Sheds water. Provides better
sound resistance etc. Saw a
demonstration of it a while back and was impressed. A bit more expensive but
still cheaper than the high density
Styrofoam stuff. I like it but I don't think there is much advantage to it
unless one is looking for something
thin. I have considered gluing the blue or pink Styrofoam to the metal door on
my garage. The only down side is
that it is not fire resistant and it would off gas some unpleasant stuff if it
was ever to catch fire. There are
blanket type things with fiberglass inside a plastic bag that are available to
attach to a garage door as well. Or
one could make their own. A friend did that with poly, insulation and one of
those doodads for sealing food bags.
It only did a foot at a time but he said it did not take long to make up
insulation bags. He was using them in an
old house with a stone basement and was concerned about water leakage damaging
the insulation. Sealing inside the
poly improved his odds in that way.

I just checked prices on styrofoam (like) sheet insulation in 4'x8' - Home
Depot has it for $9-$10 each. Once my new metal 3 car garage is done I;ll
start installing them (once I buy them) ;-) and I hear they are *very*
effective. Will insulate the ceiling and walls.

The foam sheets are easy to install buy I haven't compared prices with the
pink insulation - which I dislike because it always gets in my skin..
