as a society, we learn nothing. our entire government had lived through vietnam, and now they happily bring us the exact same show in iraq. we learned at the same time as vietnam that the inevitable conclusion of hippie culture is manson, and yet people still choose to repeat that as well.
the 19th century was an age of optimism where man and society were going to be perfected by technology, liberalism, marx, evolution, etc. much of this attitude continued into the 20th century. people could be fixed, but, y'know, they just needed socialism, housing projects near the ocean in the good salt air, affirmative action, cash, freudian analysis, feminization. and despite gobs and gobs or this nonsense, the people do not get fixed and utopian society is nowhere in sight. i can't say i'm optimistic about the human condition. in fact, i'm even starting to think the end of the world is upon us.
