The tube is just a way to draw air across the temperature
sensor. There should be a small (0.5 inch) "vent" in the flat
top of the dash, right in the middle (left to right). That is
the temp sensor. 

But to be sure there is air flowing over it so it can get an
accurate reading, there is a hose going to the blower motor
"suck" side. This way there is always cabin air going through the sensor.

I altered mine. Rather than have an automatic control, I removed
the temperature-variable-resistor with a fixed resistor. This
changed the red/blue knob from a thermostat to a temperature
control (like the old manual systems).

I don't remember what resistor value I used, but I could look it
up.
