There are times when I post things here just to stimulate my own thought 
process.
Well not exactly but thats a pleasant side effect.

So I'm thinking the plan is when the new adapter craps out, which hopefully 
won't be as soon since we're letting the heat out, we'll get a cheap battery 
charger, whack the cord off it and graft on the one from the dead adapter.

Both.  Heat kills.  Bad designs don't allow for sufficient
operating margins, including thermal.

These things aren't too fussy, you could get a low-tech
battery charger and run it.  About $20 on sale
at Harbor Freight.
