Perusal of the service manuals reveals that, when new, the compensator carries a 75 bar nitrogen charge. This further supports my theory that these devices fail because the gas leaks out and causes consequential damage.
Does anyone have one of these lying around so you can take some pictures of the outside surfaces. I'm sure there's a charging port/screw somewhere on the body.
