Absolutely not. 1985-87 3.8 engines had some minor timing chain/gear
problems (mostly just 85 -86). But, in 1988 when the 3800 was actually
called the 3800 rather than just a 3.8 (the later engine came with an
improved harmonic balancer), it did not have timing chain and gear
problems. I have seen dozens of 3800's with 300,000 miles and did not
have any issues with the chain or gears.

The only think to avoid is the 3800 in the 2000-2003 GM cars IF they
have not had the intake gasket replaced with the updated aluminum gasket
rather than the original plastic. Most of them were replaced under
warranty or did not last longer than 60,000 miles. In 94, this car had
the good intake design.
