Hi Dave,
I am disabled - have been for over 10 years with a disease not many
people have ever heard of (Chronic Inflammatory Demylinating
Polyneuropathy - the mylin covering the nerves is being attacked by
antibodies in my blood) - in case you wanted to know. I've had all kinds of
procedures, operations, ad every other kind of medical thingie performed on
me during that time and not once did the several insurance companies I had
deny or even slow down payment for something a doctor ordered. Even when
changing carriers they always picked me up even with a pre-existing
condition. Maybe I've been lucky?

IMHO, the number of appropriate procedures ordered where insurance
companies deny payment is pretty small. I think the media has taken a few
and blown them out or proportion - which is what they always do.

I know people have had horror stories where *payment for* treatment was
denied - and the media was informed and news careers were made. But when
that happens, the hospital has always been ready to make arrangements for
payment - it might be $50/mo for life but the procedure can be done.
Usually the only procedures denied payment are experimental ones - but the
line must be drawn somewhere. If something works in rats doesn't mean it
will work in people. There's a difference between treating people and
research. What if a experimental procedure kills someone? Is the insurance
co partly responsible because it approved payment? Perhaps - the legal
system is a tangled web.

Have a nice weekend - we may have to agree to disagee.
