So then, what's the difference between a Harley and the old Mercedes we
drive? Don't people drive Mercedes for the "mystique" or the character of
the car?

My view, when you buy a Harley, it is as much the "mystique" or the
character of the bike as it is the bike itself. Sure it's big,
comfortable, powerful, but so are many others.

The value holds up because the Harley "mystique" does not depreciate.
New or used, it's still a Harley Davidson.

Most HDs seem to be meticulously maintained, I mean it's rare that I
ever see one that does not look like it just rolled out of the
showroom.

I'd love to own one, but don't have the savings to spare, and it's not
something I'd go into debt for. I *hope* that I'm never in the
situation of having to finance transportation again -- took me a good
15 years to learn the folly of doing that.
