Stopping the distribution of DDT killed *Millions and millions* of people in Africa and Indonesia - as well as many here also. There just wasn't a cost effective replacement available.
While some claim DDT was the reason for the decline in eagles and other birds, there's recent evidence DDT had nothing to do with the birds - and the millions of dead people are still dead.
