Hi Bob, An engine that smokes after a short idle is an indication the Valve Stem Seals are bad. There are ways to change them by pressurizing the cylinder and avoiding removal of the head. At least thats the way it is done on gassers and I see no reason why a diesel couldn't be done the same way.
