Gang,

I was inspecting the driver's electric window mechanism on the 280SEL last
night. The window is in the habit of slipping down. The motor works, but the
glass falls. Opening up the door revealed that the large gear on the lifter is
badly worn on one side and needs to be replaced.

My question is about the wear pattern: it is one-sided, and it looks like the
motor gear and regulator gear are not on the same plane, causing the regulator
gear to rub against the support and wear on one side only.

I can't see anything obvious that is broken or hanging loose. The casting looks
bent where the regulator gear passes between it and the door inner skin, which
is odd because I thought the casting was made of pot metal and would break, not
bend.

Is there some typical failure mode of the window motor/winder assembly that
would cause the gear to rub against the support and thus wear unevenly? Apart
from replacing the window regulator, is there something else I should be
looking for (eg. I have not yet removed the motor to inspect its gear, but I
assume that MB specified the motor gear to be harder steel than the regulator
gear!).

TIA,

D.
