Yep, but a VW chassis but not just a floor pan with wheels. It has a strong perimeter frame designed to absorb energy on impact and a center tunnel that's even stronger. Then the body bolted on, adding rigidity to the whole assembly.
With the non-convertible Bug or the Ghia, you are actually riding inside the frame. VW had to weld an additional set of frame tales to the convertible.
