Maybe it's time to build a shunt or a coil. I have 12, 14, 18, 22, and 24 AWG wire. A few inches of one of them should get me a shunt of suitable resistance. Phillip, You suffered the classic hot soak failure which often occurs on Mercedes starters (and GM cars too)! New or well done rebuilt starters seem to be immune to this, for some time, so it must be bearing wear or armature swelling that causes the extra drag. The next time you travel, take along a large spray bottle of water and when the starter doesn't work, cool it down with the water. Alternatively, leaving the hood open while you stop for lunch or whatever, will often work, given a half hour or so. Many cars have heat shields around the starter and solenoid and perhaps you can make or adapt one to fit.
