A friend sent me http://survivalblog.com/ the other day.
Its got some heavy duty doom and gloom...

It just makes me want to work harder on
http://www.otherpower.com/steamengine.shtml a steam engine generator.
Everybody else can be holed up conserving their precious liquid fuel, I'll
drive an electric car powered by wood...

Seriously during WWII the Germans had alot of wood gassification digesters to
power cars (or so I've been told). At the very least we can go down that route.
I wouldn't want to try my 55 mile one way commute with one but it beats
walking...

Yeah right, obviously you have not been paying attention.
Even if worst comes to worst using a steam traction engine is way more
efficient than a pack of horses.
Then there is bio-fuel, which a Farmer can grow.
Hydrogen is perhaps another option if there are enough nuclear power
stations to produce the stuff.
Whilst the horse and mule story is nice for the doomsayers to scare
people the reality is that technology has moved along and can also move

backwards to meet demand.
