That's an interesting veiwpoint, Mitch, but I wouldn't totally agree with it. Here in Tampa the primary cable/internet provider is BrightHouse (Time/Warner). Within the last 3-4 years, Verizon's FIOS service has started to become available in many areas, and people were jumping ship like rats from a flaming - well, ship. Interestingly, there wasn't a price war in all of this - the prices for comparable services are relatively the same - but what has happened is that BH is marketing their services as month-to-month rather than an annual contract, which Verizon uses, and it's working to their advantage quite well. When FIOS was first available in my neighborhood I signed up for it, then called BH (my current provider) and asked them what kind of a deal they would give me to stay with them. They weren't the least bit moved by this, and only warned me about some of the predatory pricing that Verizon used and their use of annual contracts. That didn't sway me, but the FIOS guys coming out and cutting all of my services during the install did, so I stayed with BH. Glad I did, as Verizon (FIOS) was the subject of a front page series of articles in the Tampa paper a few months ago over their crappy support, customer service, and predatory pricing. No doubt they took a major hit for this, and as you might expect, BH amplified it as much as they could to bring people back to the fold. We're lucky in Tampa in that BH has used this market as a test bed for a lot of new products. We were one of the first systems in the country with interactive cable, HD, etc., which has been nice. I'm not excited about what I pay for the services, but they do a very good job and their support is top notch, at least it has been for me. I just feel sorry for the folks in rural areas who are getting boned over the lack of services and the inability to do anything about it. We need something like South Korea where they have wired 99% of the country for high speed access... Dan

Gov't is paid by the cable providers to hold the consumer down while the cable company rapes him. The cable company that gets the contract is the one who is willing to pay the most to the gov't. The company that is willing to pay the most is the one that does the most thorough raping.
