<< Direct RDRAM >>

<HOLY WAR>Everyone knows (rather, should know) that RDRAM memory provides a
minor speed boost compared to SDRAM, and the much higher cost of RDRAM is
completely unjustified. I've heard that Dell is switching back to SDRAM in
its computers now, which is a Good Thing(TM).</HOLY WAR>

Due to a PC error I have lost the complete Prime directory on my PC.
Can someone tell me how to get my exponents back from the base?

All benchmarks say is that "It's good for *this* application". I've heard
that it speeds up mersenne calculations on some MBs. Now, that's nice, but
if it doesn't speed it up enough vs its cost..... That's the question.

I'm just going to hold my breath for DDR-SDRAM. Cheaper, faster, better
supported. Dual Athlon/interleaved DDR memory. Hold on to your hats....

Subject: Mersenne: GIMPS package for Debian

    Hi all,

I have just released 'prime-net' a Debian package for the latest
version of the GIMPS client: version 20.6.2. You are all welcome to give
it a try (assuming you are using Debian) and to send me bug reports,
suggestions for improvement, ... You will find it in Woody's
non-free/misc section. Otherwise you can download it from:

    http://www.debian.org/Packages/unstable/misc/prime-net.html

or from my home page:

    http://fgouget.free.fr/distributed/prime-net-en.shtml

My goal when making this package was to try to give a broad audience
to the GIMPS client and to make it very simple for Debian users to try
it. The package takes care of setting up the scripts for
starting/stopping the client on bootup/shutdown, rotating the logs, ...

If you search for prime-net on Debian's site you will notice that an
older version based on version 19.1 will be released as part of Potato,
the soon to be released Debian 2.2. The reason it's an older version is
that Potato has been frozen for such a long time. There's no reason to
use this old package since the latest one will work just as well on
Slink, Potato and Woody.

                      Computers are like airconditioners
They stop working properly if you open WINDOWS
